Project Description
Oyu Tolgoi, in the Umnugovi province of Mongolia, is one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. Jointly owned by Rio Tinto and the government of Mongolia, Rio Tinto manages the mine operation on behalf of the owners.
Oyu Tolgoi originally commenced as an open pit mine with copper concentrator in 2011, however in March 2023 underground production began, allowing the mine to operate for decades to come.
The surface and underground integrated copper business is now one of the most important copper producers in the world with a high performing long-term strategy for Oyu Tolgoi to produce 500,000 tonnes per annum of copper at peak production.
